Yes, We did!
Who would have believed that 13 writers with little publishing experience, no distribution network and no money could produce a book, sell hundreds of copies and make a profit, all in less than one year?
Well, we believed we could, and we did.
We – The Writers’ Dozen – launched our anthology, Better Than Chocolate, in September 2008 at The Writers’ Centre and were ecstatic about the amazing reception we received. More success followed as we sold copy after copy leading up to Christmas and managed to sell through shops such as The Lindfield Bookshop and Glebebooks to name just a couple.
The highlight came on Saturday 7th February 2009 when we presented a cheque for $6000 to Founder and CEO of Room to Read, John Wood at Berkelouw’s Paddington. This money will build a library in a developing country and help provide the gift of literacy for children who may otherwise never learn to read.
Our small project not only achieved its aim, it produced a superbly designed book of which we are all immensely proud, helped us work towards a common goal and cemented our bond as writing buddies and budding writers.

What is Better Than Chocolate?
Not a lot really, except for this new collection of morsels from The Writers’ Dozen. This mix of dark and light tales about life, love and death is peppered with poignancy and laugh-out-loud moments.
Designed as the perfect gift or a personal treat for readers to dip into and indulge themselves, Better Than Chocolate has been compiled as a fund-raiser for the charity Room to Read, which partners with local communities in the developing world to build schools and libraries and establish educational infrastructure and scholarships.
